Why the posted rate is never the real one
A 600-mile load at $2.50 pays $1,500. Drive 200 empty miles to get to it and you covered 800 miles for that $1,500, which is $1.88 a mile. Fuel burns on the empty miles the same as the loaded ones, so deadhead costs you twice: once in what you spend, and once in what you earn per mile.
The other number worth watching is what's left per day the load ties the truck up. Two loads at the same rate per mile can pay very differently once one of them eats three days and the other eats one.
